Mike's talk will be about the construction and running of Somewherenear.com, one of the first geographic search engines to be found on the web. The talk will describe the design, construction and implementation of the site which, despite the modern fad for Java, XML and buzzword soup, remains resolutely lo-tech. Nonetheless, fascias for WAP and i-mode were constructed in 3 and 1 days respectively. Flash, expensive and glitzy isn't always what is needed. Expect a sleeves-rolled-up warts-and-all expose, not irrelevant marketing tosh.

No commercial software (barring the OSGB maps) was used in the construction.
